SPOKANE, Wash. – Home runs from Jimmy Sinatro and Caleb Wood powered the Gonzaga University baseball team in its home opener Saturday as the Bulldogs blasted Loyola Marymount 10-5 at Patterson Baseball Complex.
Friday night’s game between the two sides was rained out, forcing the Saturday doubleheader.
By taking the opening game, GU improves to 10-14 overall and 6-1 in West Coast Conference games. LMU slides to 15-11, 5-2 WCC.
The Bulldogs bats got the best of reigning WCC Pitcher of the Week Colin Welmon. The Zags burned the right-handed pitcher for 13 hits and 10 runs in 5.1 innings of work.
Gonzaga’s starter Taylor Jones allowed two-runs in the first inning but settled down by not allowing another hit until the seventh inning. Jones picked up the win after working seven innings, allowing three-runs on seven hits while striking out four.
The Zags took a 3-2 in the bottom of the opening frame on Sinatro’s homer. The starting catcher brought home Mitchell Gunsolus and Caleb Wood on the hit over the left field fence.
Gonzaga added runs in the second and third innings on a Gunsolus sacrifice fly and a fielding error by the Lions shortstop.
Wood had his two-run home run in the fourth giving GU an 8-2 lead. Scoring on the homer was Gunsolus who reached on two outs by getting hit by a pitch.
The final two Zag runs came on a Sam Brown triple down the right field line in the bottom of the sixth.
Gonzaga out-hit Loyola Marymount 13-11 with multiple hit performances coming from Payden Cawley Lamb, Wood, Sinatro and Brown.
Karl Myers relieved Jones in the eighth inning for his sixth appearance of the year. Myers worked two innings but allowed two runs on four hits.
Pacing the Lions was David Fletcher and Tommy Cheek. Each had a pair of RBI.
