VICTORIA, British Columbia - Alessio Bertaggia's tip of a Brenden Kichton pass found the net 3:38 into overtime to lift the Spokane Chiefs to a 4-3 OT win over the Victoria Royals Friday night in Victoria, B.C. The win was Spokane's 4th straight and lifted them past Tri City into 4th place in the Western Conference playoff race.
The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Mitch Holmberg power play goal 3:30 into the first period. Holmberg's 36th goal of the year was assisted by Brenden Kichton and Mike Aviani. Victoria's Logan Nelson and Brandon Magee scored power play goals in the period to give the Royals a 2-1 lead after one. Spokane's Carter Proft would score Spokane's second power play goal of the night on a 5 on 3 advantage at 12:56 of the second period to tie the game at two after 40 minutes. Kichton picked up his second assist of the night, while Reid Gow had the other helper.
Spokane would take the lead at 6:12 of the third on Blake Gal's 12th goal of the year from Dylan Walchuk and Todd Fiddler. Nelson then tied the game at 13:24 for Victoria to send the game in overtime. Chiefs goalie would make a point blank save early in overtime to keep the game tied, before Bertaggia tipped in his 22nd of the year from Kichton and Gow in overtime for the game winner. The goal was originally credited to Aviani, but upon review, Bertaggia got credit for the goal.
Spokane outshot Victoria 36-32 in the game, going 2-6 on the power play and 3-5 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs now have an 8 point lead over the Royals for 4th in the Conference. The two teams will finish off their season series in Victoria Saturday night at 7:05pm.
