Weather delays DIII World Series; Whitworth up 4-2
APPLETON, Wis. – Saturday's NCAA Division III baseball championship tournament contest between Whitworth and sixth-ranked Christopher Newport has been postponed by rain with the Pirates leading the Captains 4-2 in the middle of the fifth inning.
The game will resume at Noon (CDT) on Sunday. The winner will stay alive while the loser will be the second team eliminated from the 2012 Division III World Series.
Whitworth starting pitcher Carson Blumenthal threw five strong innings for Whitworth, allowing only one earned run on three hits. He will be the winning pitcher if the Pirates can hold on for the victory.
JR Jarrell has driven in two of the Whitworth runs, while Gerhard Muelheims is 2-2 with two runs scored.
The only thing that has gone wrong so far for the Pirates is a season-high five errors so far.
The winner of this game will play the loser of the game between Wheaton (Mass.) and SUNY-Cortland.
Earlier on Saturday Webster (Mo.) stayed alive with an 8-7 victory over Kean (N.J.) in the tournament's first loser-out game.
