Junior Dominique Blackman has been named the Idaho Vandals starting quarterback, the Vandals Athletic Department confirmed on Monday.
Blackman had been battling fellow junior, Taylor Davis for the job. Through the teams first two scrimmages of the fall, Blackman outperformed Davis who started three games for Robb Akey's team in 2011. Blackman completed 25 of 35 passes for 353 yards and six touchdowns.
“I’ve been telling everybody we needed separation to come about at the quarterback position. We feel that separation has created itself throughout this camp. Taking into account the practices as well as the scrimmages, the preparation, we have make Dominique our starting quarterback. He’s very excited about that," Vandals head coach Robb Akey said.
Blackman, 6-5, 254 pounds, had to sit out last season after transferring to Idaho from Old Dominion. The Vandals open the 2012 campaign on Thursday, 8/30 at home against Eastern Washington. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
