The game we had all been waiting for sure lived up to the hype on Thursday night at Joe Albi Stadium. Undefeated Mead and Gonzaga Prep battled to the final bell, with the Pups holding on for the 33-27 win.
Gonzaga Prep seemed to be in the drivers seat after a Griffin Hare seven yard run gave them a 21-6 lead in the second quarter. But two Austin Stone one yard touchdown runs brought the Panthers within two, at 21-19 in the third quarter.
However, Mead kept shooting itself in the foot. AJ Roberts had his punt blocked by Alex Berry and Chris Szambelan returned it 34 yards for a score to make it 27-19. Mead would again battle back to tie it thanks to a Gunnar Kayser three yard quarterback keeper, and a conversion on the two point try.
But Prep answered right back. A three yard touchdown run by Hare with 2:31 left in the game gave the Pups the lead back for good. It was finally over when Kaysar's pass was picked off by Trevor Cote with just three seconds left in the game.
With the win, Gonzaga Prep takes over sole possession of first place in the GSL with a 5-0 record. Mead falls to 4-1, a half game ahead of both Central Valley and Ferris.
