Gonzaga University left-handed pitcher Tyler Olson, a graduate of Spokane’s University High, was selected by the Oakland A’s Wednesday in the 17th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft.
Olson, the 529th overall pick in this year’s draft, went 5-4 with a 2.77 earned run average while starting all 15 of his appearances this season as he led the Zags in starts. He also led the Bulldogs in innings pitched and was second in the West Coast Conference with 100 1/3 and was second on the team in strikeouts with 90 in earning WCC honorable mention honors.
Olson was the second Bulldog drafted this year. Outfielder Royce Bolinger was a 6th-round pick of the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. The 40-round draft concluded Wednesday.
