Carter Comito defended his title in the discus on the opening night of the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Comito won with a throw of 57.86 meters (189’-10”). He defeated runner-up Tyler Genovese of Wis.-Eau Claire (182-01) by nearly eight feet.
Samuel Wright, battling illness, fouled on all three of his attempts in the first flight.
Comito fouled on two of his first three attempts, but still advanced to finals with the best throw of the preliminary flights (55.25 meters). He then tossed his winning throw on his first attempt in finals before fouling on both of his final throws.
Comito finished ninth in the discus as a freshman in 2010 then won the event last year.
His victory gives the Pirates 10 points following the first day of competition.
On Friday Frank Lima will compete for the Pirates in the men's high jump while Jheri Gates competes in the women's high jump.
