The Cheney Blackhawks got a scare in their 2A state soccer opener. But in the end, the GNL champs improved to 18-0, advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals with a 2-1 win in double overtime over Othello on Wednesday night at Gonzaga Prep.
Things started off like they usually do for the Blackhawks. Micah Weller made a nice touch pass to C.J. Skillingstad who found net in the matches 28th minute to give them a 1-0 lead.
But Othello was able to keep it close, in large part, because Cheney couldn't convert on several close chances. And then the unthinkable happened. The Huskies tied the game in the 78th minute, sending the contest into overtime.
The Blackhawks play Toppenish in the 2A quarters on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep. The Wildcats beat Pullman 2-0 on Wednesday night. Pullman ends it's season, 12-6.
