Six former Gonzaga University men’s basketball players are participating in the NBA Summer League.
Adam Morrison, the third pick of the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2006 NBA Draft after leaving Gonzaga following his junior season, has been playing with the Brooklyn Nets in the Orlando Summer League. He was averaging 6.7 ppg and 4.7 rpg with two starts in the first three games. The Orlando Summer League ends Thursday, with the Nets playing a game later Thursday.
Morrison, who prepped at Spokane’s Mead High, will be with the Los Angeles Clippers in the Las Vegas Summer League which begins Friday and runs until July 22. Morrison played for Besiktas in Turkey this past season. Morrison played the 2006-07 season with Charlotte, sat out the following season with a knee injury suffered in the pre-season and was traded by Charlotte to the Los Angeles Lakers mid-way through the 2008-09 season. He was with the Lakers when they won back-to-back NBA titles in 2009 and 2010, his last season in the league.
Austin Daye, the 15th pick of the Detroit Pistons in the 2009 NBA Draft after leaving Gonzaga following his sophomore season, averaged 15.8 ppg and 5.2 rpg for the Pistons in Orlando. He scored 24 points against the Orlando Magic. Detroit finished 3-1 in its four games in Orlando. Daye is a free agent and can sign with any NBA team for next season.
In addition to Morrison, four other Bulldogs will be in Las Vegas beginning Friday.
Micah Downs, the 2009 West Coast Conference Tournament MVP in helping Gonzaga to the title, will play for the Dallas Mavericks. Downs has played in Croatia, Belgium and, this past season, Spain.
Jeremy Pargo, who finished this past NBA season with the Memphis Grizzlies, will be with the Grizzlies in Las Vegas. Pargo played in Israel for two seasons and was signed by Memphis last December.
Steven Gray, who graduated from Gonzaga in 2011, will be with the Washington Wizards in Las Vegas. He played with Vestpils in Latvia last season.
