Spokane 6th graders will join middle school in 2021

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane School Board has made its decision on future grade configuration, deciding this week that sixth graders will move to middle school beginning in 2021.

The district has spent the last several months gathering input about the possible change to the class configurations. The district is trying to meet legislative demands for smaller class sizes, while also planning for future school construction.

In its report, the committee investigating the change finds that "additional and broader academic opportunities can be provided for 6th grade students in the core courses, such as math and science, as well as electives like music and foreign language."

The committee also finds that 6th graders are more in line, maturity-wise, with 7th and 8th graders. The district also believes this configuration will allow more consistent school boundaries and require less construction and transportation changes.
