Playing with Barbie dolls could limit how girls view their career choices.

That's according to an experiment conducted by Aurora M. Sherman, an associate professor in the School of Psychological Science at Oregon State University.

A group of 37 girls ages 4 to 7 participated in the study, with each of them randomly assigned either a fashion Barbie, a Barbie dressed as a doctor, or a Mrs. Potato Head. After a few minutes, the girls were asked about possible careers.

Sherman reported girls who played with Barbie thought they could do fewer jobs than boys. Those with Mrs. Potato Head thought they could do about the same.

The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Sex Roles.
