A 34-year-old convicted killer seeking to have his sentence reduced was given more time in prison Tuesday by a judge in Yakima.
Joel Ramos was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the beating and stabbing deaths of a couple and their two son in 1993 near Outlook. Ramos and a co-defendant were both 14 at the time of the murders.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports his lawyer asked Superior Court Judge Douglas Federspiel to resentence Ramos to 27 years.
Instead, the judge increased his sentence to 85 years. The judge called the crimes "monstrous" and said, "The punishment is just. It protects the public."
