SPOKANE, Wash. -

Planning to get away for Christmas? Grab your credit card. This is the week to book if you want to save money.

Travel site Hopper.com says you can find the best travel deals 80 days out. As of Friday, we're 72 days from Christmas.

While holiday airfare is always more expensive than other times of the year, there is some good news; travel prices are tracking about 12 percent lower than last year. But, you could be paying an extra $1.50 per day as we inch closer to the busiest travel weeks of the year.

For the best deals, try to be flexible. You'll find the best prices if you travel on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. While not ideal, it could be worth it if you're paying for your entire family to fly. The next best travel dates are December 20th and January 5th. If you can extend your vacation a little bit, you could save a lot of money.

The best thing you can do is sign up for fare alerts from multiple travel websites. If you see a good deal, jump on it. Prices aren't likely to go down as we head deeper into the holiday travel season.
