SPOKANE, Wash. -

The push is on to bring travelers to Spokane! Visit Spokane is expanding their marketing efforts, hoping to gain national attention.

With a river flowing through the heart of the city, locals know Spokane is special, but now Visit Spokane is spreading the word nationwide.

"We've added staff, we've increased our marketing and that's what it takes," Kilday said.

Visit Spokane is running ads on Good Morning America's electronic billboard in Times Square. They'll also be in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Food and Travel Magazine.

"That national message is really important when you are trying to capture meeting planners, we need to elevate the image of the community for leisure travel and business travel," Kilday said.

The new hotel and expanding convention center are helping to fuel these marketing efforts!

Convention Center General Manager Johnna Boxley says once the first wall is up, construction should move quickly, and will allow them to be the host with the most.

"This way we could do a convention on the east side of the building and west and that just means more room nights and more people coming to Spokane," Boxley said.

Spokane competes with cities like Portland and Sacramento to land meetings and events but Visit Spokane hopes this marketing blitz gives them the competitive edge they need!

"It really reinforces that we are an entity - that people will go oh they are a city, they are a community we need to look at," Kilday said.

The Convention Center expansion is expected to be completed in December 2014.
