SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane veteran who left high school early to fight in World War II was posthumously awarded his diploma tonight.

It's been nearly seven decades since Frank Materne was a student at Rogers High School, but the district never forgot his commitment to our country, or his classes.

Materne passed away last year at the age of 86 from heart failure, but his widow Carol says getting his diploma was always important, and he would be proud that she followed through on his dream.

"I'm very proud of being here and I wanted to do it in his memory. It was something that he wanted to do, so I figured that I would go ahead and receive it for him," she said.

Carol also told us she plans to display the diploma proudly in her home.
