A teenage pilot on her first solo flight escaped a crash in the northwestern Wyoming backcountry with just minor injuries.
The Park County Sheriff's Office says 17-year-old McKenzie Morgan of Billings, Mont. became disoriented after taking off from Greybull Tuesday and ended up southwest of Meeteetse. She crashed in an extremely rugged part of the Shoshone National Forest near an abandoned mining town.
Two men out scouting elk on horseback saw the Cessna 172 go down. One called authorities while the other, Joshua Alexander of Douglas, headed toward the crash.
Morgan walked some distance before meeting up with Alexander, who put Morgan on his horse and walked her out.
Had the two men not seen the crash, authorities say Morgan could still be out in the backcountry.
