A deserving Spokane veteran is asking for your help in a contest that would win him a new, handicap accessible van.
David Fried is paralyzed from the waist down. The van they have now breaks down often with expensive repairs, and only gets about 10 miles to the gallon. It's something he and his wife just can't continue to afford.
Fried was paralyzed after a surgery to repair an aneurism, but he refuses to let his disability define him. He's a veteran, a patriot, a sportsman and a husband. He served six years in the US Navy and loved every minute.
"One of those things I think we all ought to serve the country, and when I got out of high school I was in the Navy," he said.
When Fried and his wife Kay found out he was nominated for the 2013 Penzoil "Love Your Car" giveaway, they were excited. When they learned they were in the top six contestants in the country, they couldn't believe it.
"It would be so much better for us," Fried said. "There is so much my wife has to do when we go places."
The contest is only for paralyzed veterans like Fried. He says just to have a chance at winning something so great is a real honor.
"With a new van like this if I was lucky enough to get it, it would be so much easier on her and me."
