SPOKANE, Wash. -

Police are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run on Sunday night in east Spokane.

The incident happened at the intersection of Mission and Riverton near the Avista headquarters.

Spokane Police arrived at the collision scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. and found the male victim dead. A witness told police that they saw a gold "Jeep" type SUV heading eastbound after hitting the pedestrian and that several other vehicles also hit the man.

Officers closed the Mission Street Bridge while investigators worked to pinpoint the point of impact. Authorities say that they had to work fast because snow will destroy the crime scene.

"We're doing the best to try to preserve what evidence we can, but it is a fairly large crime scene and it's very difficult to do," said Spokane Police Lieutenant Tom Hendren.

An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Monday, after which the medical examiner will release the victim's identity and cause of death.

Police are asking that witnesses call Crime Check at (509)456-2233.
