Although few in numbers, those gathered at Liberty Park Thursday night joined people across the nation who are outraged at the recent shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
The event was sponsored by "Don't Shoot," an organization that aims to end gun violence in Spokane through public awareness and gang intervention. The group says the militarization of police and the escalation of violence in recent years has gotten out of control.
"It's not ok for police to get away with the things they've been getting away with. There's a lot of families mourning over the death of their loved ones that are in the police's hands," said Don't Shoot's Justin Pimsanguan.
He adds that the while Brown's death is tragic, it has brought more attention to this issue.
