A debate over values and decency is heating up in Spokane as the city council may soon crack down on scantily-clad bikini baristas.
City Councilman Mike Fagan started down the road of regulating bikini baristas after a constituent shared her concerns about Big Shots Espresso.
"There are just a lot of unanswered questions at this point and time but the one thing that remains constant is this: This is not decent," Fagan said. "We're talking about pasties and a G-string only. Here we are talking about pasties and a sticker only."
"Spokane has had adult entertainment for years and we are nothing near that, so I think we are going to do just fine," said Niqui Kukel, co-owner of XXX Espresso.
XXX Espresso doesn't allow girls to wear only pasties or G-strings; that attire mostly is found at Big Shots Espresso, still, Fagan's proposed ordinance would mean XXX would have to move its Northwest Boulevard location to an area zoned for adult business.
"I don't believe that they have any right to do this, they are not showing anything illegal that I've known of," Anthony Devaney said.
Vanessa Abrahamson works at Deb's Espresso down the street from XXX Espresso on Northwest Boulevard. She's learned to live with the new breed of coffee shop, but are worried about these businesses so close to schools and are tired of being confused with XXX.
"People pull up and say 'Oh you have your clothes on' and we're like 'Yeah we wear our clothes every day,'" Abrahamson said.
"They don't have to come here, they can go to another coffee stand, Starbucks does great coffee, there are multiple local businesses that do great coffee so they just don't have to come and see us," Niqui Kukel said.
"I have no problem with these folks conducting their business," Fagan said. "I wish them all the luck in the world but I do believe that this is not a Spokane value."
