SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

A Spokane County Sheriff K9 is recovering tonight after being attacked by a pit bull during a foot pursuit Monday night.

According to Deputy Craig Chamberlin, K9 Laslo and his handler Deputy Jeff Thurman were responding to a report of a burglary in progress in the 19100 block of Cane Court. The suspect fled the scene on foot, with Laslo and Deputy Thurman in pursuit.

As the pair turned a corner, a pit bull that had been tied to a nearby fence broke free and bit down on Laslo's leg.

Deputy Thurman attempted to pull the pit bull off of Laslo, but was unable to and instead fired his weapon twice and killed the attacking dog.

Laslo received six staples in his leg as a result of the attack but was allowed to return home with Deputy Thurman Monday evening and will make a full recovery.

The burglary suspect remains at large.
