SPOKANE, Wash. -

The Garland Theater is like new again, as its owners are wrapping up a major renovation that brings the old movie house into the digital age.

The theater has been on the corner of Garland and Monroe since 1945, but a huge renovation is making this old theater the new kid on the block.

"When they walk into the auditorium they'll notice we have brand new seats, and they really are the most comfortable in Spokane," Garland Theater manager Dena Carr said.

The Garland's makeover includes new seats, which are wider and have more leg room, and a new digital movie projector.

"With the digital system we have perfect picture clarity, the sound is great, it's been great for us," Carr said.

The changes include the concessions stand, which has a new menu that ties in with the theater's cocktail lounge, Bon Bon, which will serve beer and wine along with classic concessions stand fare.

"We have high quality hot dogs, gourmet sausages available, a really nice nacho plate and they get a good local draft beer to go along with it," Carr said.

Adding alcohol to the menu will help make the Garland competitive with other theaters in the area.

"We're looking for new ways to generate revenue.  The movie industry is becoming more challenging and it gives us a leg up when we're competing with multiplexes," she said.

Ticket prices will remain the same and daily matinees will be alcohol free, but evening shows can be enjoyed with beer or wine.

"You can still sit with family and enjoy an adult beverage as you watch Monsters University," Carr said.

The renovations have taken about six months. The last piece is replacing a little bit of the old carpet with new carpet and that should be finished in the next few weeks.
