A Pullman City Councilman was taken into protective custody Wednesday after he allegedly threw furniture off his apartment balcony and began acting bizarrely with a knife in his hand.
Sgt. Sam Sorem with the Pullman Police Department said neighbors reported 23-year-old Derrick Skaug began acting strange Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning at the Meadow Brooke Apartments.
After several complaints, police and firefighters responded for a welfare check. Once police got inside Skaug's apartment they found him locked inside a bathroom.
"So we basically had a dialogue through the door for a while, and eventually he came out," said Sgt. Sam Sorem.
"Ultimately it's a welfare check, and it looked to me like he needed professional help so we took him into protective custody, which we are allowed to do," he added.
In the past year, Skaug has been arrested twice for suspicion of DUI. Skaug was appointed to the Pullman City Council in 2012, making him one of the youngest people to hold an office in Washington.
