NEWPORT, Wash. -

The Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office is asking for help tracking down an inmate who escaped and may have crossed into North Idaho.

Ryan Apling, 29, escaped from the Pend Oreille County Jail around 3:30 Wednesday, injuring himself on razor wire while scaling several fences. A Newport school was placed in lockdown for about an hour and a half as a precaution.

Sheriff's deputies, supported by Bonner County deputies and a U.S. Border Patrol K-9 team tracked Apling for several miles before the trail was lost.

Apling is 5' 10", 140 pounds, with blue eyes and short blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. His orange jail clothing was discovered outside the fence.

Apling was in custody for failing to appear in court on a criminal trespassing and a driving with license suspended charge.

If you see him you're asked to call the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office at 509-447-1980.
