SPOKANE, Wash. -

A huge backup on I-90 Friday afternoon was caused by a semi-trick that lost part of its load of peas in the westbound lanes near the Freya exit in East Central Spokane.

The Washington State Patrol reports the semi dropped several boxes onto the roadway, and at least one vehicle hit one of the boxes, blocking the right and center lanes. The Department of Transportation sent a sweeper truck to clean up the peas.

For a while only one lane of the westbound lanes of I-90 was open, causing a five-mile traffic jam.

The freeway was reopened and relatively pea-free by 4:30 p.m.
