Neighbors in the Southgate neighborhood gathered to express their concerns over a new development at 55th and Regal. Developers want to put new shops and drive thru restaurants in the area, but neighbors say it will create even more of a traffic nightmare.
Neighbors say their commute times have increased over the years, and they don't want that to continue. That's why they wanted to make sure their voices were heard tonight.
"Try to come out of Shopko or Ace Hardware or Target any hour of the day," said Valerie Fawcett. "You might as well sit there and eat your lunch."
The Southgate member gathered at Fire Station 8 Wednesday night to share their concerns with Whipple Consulting Engineers. The developer hopes to put new shops and restaurants in the area of 55th and Regal, an area that neighbors say already has too much development.
"This is ridiculous to think that we're going to put an impact like this on our community on this Regal Road that's impacted," Fawcett said.
Whipple Consulting held the meeting to gather concerns from community members ahead of a traffic impact study. But, Fawcett says these developments go beyond just traffic. She says they raise safety issues.
"I don't want to see this community to be developed into a development of crime," she said.
Others at the meeting said they weren't against the development, but are worried not enough is being done to mitigate the impact it will have on traffic.
The developers will be taking the concerns community members laid out tonight to the city and the county to figure out exactly which areas will be part of the traffic impact study.
