SPOKANE, Wash. -

Fire crews are investigating the cause of a suspicious apartment fire that started in Spokane early Thursday morning.

Crews responded to a fire in the Hamilton House apartments on the corner of Boone and Hamilton just after midnight.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke in the building and began evacuating 42 apartments.

Many of the building's residents are elderly, and five of them had to be carried to the street by responders.

An STA bus came to give tenants a place to warm up until they could return to their homes.

Hamilton House tenant Janet Springer said that she smelled gas in the laundry room of the building but could not get the fire alarms to activate.

Investigators are looking into her report and say the fire is suspicious.
