SPOKANE, Wash. -

An event at the Bing Crosby Theater to celebrate the life of former Speaker of the House Tom Foley is scheduled for Wednesday, July 24.

The event is free and will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

"We want this to be a living tribute to a statesman," said co-organizer and local business owner, Rich Cowan.

"Tom's health is currently very frail. We'd like him to know we appreciate him and everything he did for eastern Washington," Cowan added.

Foley was born in Spokane on March 6, 1929. Foley was sworn in as the U.S. Representative of Washington's Fifth Congressional district in 1965. He then became the 57th Speaker in 1989 and served in this capacity until 1995.

The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service was established at Washington State University in 1995.
