Spokane County Sheriff deputies have arrested a man accused of shooting another man in the face Thursday evening.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Craig Chamberlin said 60-year-old John Payne drove to his ex-girlfriend's home at 4035 S. Conifer Ct. and shot another man in the jaw.

The man was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Jeff Sheffield lives next door to where the shooting happened and said he's had problems with Payne for several years. Sheffield said Payne has threatened his life and other neighbors lives in the past.

"Yeah, I'm pissed," said Jeff Sheffield.

"If I would have give him any reason to shoot me, he wants to shoot somebody obviously. I never gave him any reason to shoot me. I just got the heck away," he added.

Sheffield said he heard a gunshot Thursday night and then watched Payne leave the home and calmly get on a brand new red Harley Davidson Breakout and ride down the road.

Police found Payne in a wooded area near Bowdish and Dishman Mica Road and was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. Friday. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail on felony charges of attempted first degree murder and first degree assault.
