The newest member of Spokane's SWAT Team is about to go on duty. When he joins the elite team of officers, he'll be extra prepared thanks to the community's support.
"He's a huge part of protecting not only us as deputies but also the community and making it a lot safer for everyone," Deputy Tyler Kullman said.
Deputy Kullman and his dog Deacon are joining the SWAT Team next month.
"I was given a very old K-9 vest for him, it's thin, the armor is way past due, it's not fitted to him," Deputy Kullman said.
There isn't money to buy a special vest for Deacon because of the K-9's limited budget, but Carla Blazek is coming to the rescue.
Blazek is a photographer who frequently snaps photos of Deacon. When she heard this beloved German Shepherd was entering into dangerous territory by joining the SWAT Team, she had an idea - get the dog a bulletproof vest.
"I had no idea that within eight days we would have raised the full amount and now we are above the amount," Blazek said.
Almost $3,000 was raised through a Go Fund Me account, giving Deputy Kullman piece of mind that his dog is protected.
"He can wear it on patrol, he can repel with it, do pretty much anything we need to do with it, track with it," Deputy Kullman said.
These partners in crime are keeping the streets of Spokane safe and each other too.
"It makes me feel a lot more comfortable sending him into the situations he is going into," Deputy Kullman said.
