While taunting negotiators, an armed burglary suspect plummeted from his perch atop a roof, bringing an hours-long standoff to a peaceful -- albeit painful for the suspect -- end.
Brent Nouwels, 32, was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the fall, but not before being charged with attempted residential burglary and felony harassment.
Around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday police responded to a call from a person who said a neighbor was outside his window with a gun and was attempting to kick in the door to burglarize the home. When officers arrived Nouwels had returned to his home and shut off his lights.
Officers attempted to talk Nouwels into coming out of his house through phone calls and their public address systems on their patrol cars but he failed to respond. Negotiators were brought to the scene to try and talk him out and, around 2:30 a.m. he did come out of the house, climbing onto the roof from a bedroom window.
At this point Nouwels, according to police, decided to start taunting officers, telling them he wanted to fight them. Unfortunately about this time he lost his balance on his roof, which was icy, slid down the roof and fell into his backyard, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and then taken to the jail to be booked on the attempted residential burglary and felony harassment charges. Officers later executed a search warrant on his home to retrieve evidence, including a firearm.
