Cottage Grove, OR -

A bank has moved to foreclose on a factory in Cottage Grove that once employed 100 people making retractable steps for motor homes but closed when the Great Recession hammered Lane County's RV industry.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports the Kwikee Products factory is 86,000 square feet, the second-largest industrial building in Cottage Grove, a city of nearly 10,000 people. A Weyerhaeuser plant is the largest.

Wells Fargo has filed a foreclosure lawsuit in Lane County against the building's owner, a company headed by Seattle-area businessman Douglas Mergenthaler.

The suit says it owes nearly $4 million in mortgage principal and interest. Mergenthaler didn't immediately return a message left Wednesday at his holding company.

The factory was built in 1995. It has been listed for sale for months.
