Yakima County's unclaimed dead to go in mass grave
The Yakima County coroner plans to place unclaimed remains in a mass grave.
Coroner Jack Hawkins would prefer that relatives claim the cremated remains of 85 people now held in boxes in his office. But some are a century old and most have gone unclaimed for decades. Most were elderly people who died in nursing care.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports sometime later this month or early November they'll be placed in a grave at the Tahoma Cemetery operated by the city of Yakima.
Individual remains will still be identifiable. Hawkins plans to open the grave each year to take out any that are requested and to add any new unclaimed remains.
