Woman shot, killed at apartment complex near SFCC
Spokane Major Crimes detectives are investigating a deadly early morning shooting near Spokane Falls Community College.
The shooting happened at the College Terrace Apartments around 4:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of West Fort George Drive.
Early Monday morning police received calls from several people at the complex who heard shots fired and a woman screaming for her life.
"I heard the sound, which I first thought it was a car backfiring or something," Joshua Wilde said.
Initially Wilde, who lives in the complex, didn't think anything of what he heard.
"You know it's college apartments, shenanigans go on all the time," he said.
"Looking back at what happened, it must have been the gunshot because it was at the exact same time as I heard it at," he said.
Emergency crews found a woman lying on the ground, shot, between a garage and an apartment building. They tried to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Throughout the day, investigators were at the apartment complex snapping pictures, speaking with witnesses and collecting evidence.
"We are convassing the apartments and the area to see what we can find," Spokane Police Lieutenant Alan Arnzen said. "We are going door to door in the complex, checking to see who is here so we can account for everyone."
The medical examiner's office reports the identification of the victim has not been established yet. Authorities don't know if she lived at the apartment complex or was a student at SFCC.
"The idea of a gunshot or something going off is definitely a surprise," Wilde said. He was so shaken up he decided not to go to work Monday. He's concerned both for his and his girlfriend's safety.
"I'm supposed to be the one that makes sure she is okay and when I walk outside my apartment 30 feet away someone got murdered it makes me very on edge," he added.
Police haven't named any suspects yet but are following up on lead that a car may have been involved.
