A woman fell to her death while hiking at the Indian Painted Rocks off Rutter Parkway Thursday night.
The medical examiner identified the woman as Lois Ordway-Fleck, 18, a recent graduate of Mt. Spokane High School. The cause of death was listed as basal skull fracture from blunt impact.
Spokane County Sheriff's deputies said Ordway was hiking with four other people; there were four women and one man in the group, whose ages ranged from 18 to 24-years-old.
Emergency crews relied on the sheriff's helicopter, Air 1, for light support during the recovery.
Fire personnel recovered her body around 10:30 p.m.
Chamberlin said the other woman who was with Ordway also had to be rescued. She was uninjured. The people were not equipped to be hiking and one of the women was wearing flip-flops, he added.
