Wanted fugitives arrested driving stolen SUV in WSP parking lot
That was easy. Two criminals with outstanding felony warrants were captured after they drove a stolen vehicle, with license plates from another vehicle, through the Washington State Patrol headquarters parking lot Thursday.
Trooper Joe Pass stopped a red Chevy Blazer driving through the District 4 headquarters in Spokane Thursday when he thought the vehicle looked suspicious.
When he ran a license plate check on the vehicle he discovered the registered owner had a warrant out for his arrest. When Pass spoke with the driver, telling him he had a warrant out for his arrest, the man stated that he didn't own the vehicle he was driving. The driver, when asked for his identification, told the trooper that he didn't have any identification but gave Pass his name and birthdate, which was determined to be a false name.
When he was asked to get out of the SUV identification was found on him, identifying him as Brook Abbott, 42, who had a felony warrant out for his arrest. And as it turned out, Abbott definitely didn't own the vehicle he was driving.
The problem was the license plate on the Chevy Blazer actually belonged to a red GMC Jimmy. So Trooper Pass checked the vehicle identification number on the Blazer and found it was stolen in Bozeman, Mont., on Sept. 2.
Meanwhile a passenger in the Blazer, seeing that Abbott was being arrested, got out of the SUV and ran from the WSP parking lot. He didn't run far, however, as he was found later in the nearby bar of the Denny's restaurant near the intersection of Geiger and Grove. The passenger was later identified as Charles Miller, 42, who also had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest.
Miller and Abbott were given a ride to the Spokane County Jail, where they were booked on their respective felony arrest warrants. Abbott also is facing charges of giving false information and possession of stolen property.
