The cause of a basement fire at a house in the West Central area of Spokane is under investigation.

Fire crews were called to the house in the 1900 block of West Augusta around 8:50 a.m. on reports of heavy smoke coming from the single-story home.

Firefighters first cut holes in the roof to vent the smoke and moved inside the find the source was coming from the basement. At one point, firefighters had to evacuate the house due to untenable fire conditions.

The fire was eventually contained to the basement and first floor and extinguished within an hour.

Two people who lived inside the home made it out unhurt, but their two dogs, that were in the basement, died.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Red Cross is helping the two residents find shelter.
