Thompson defense recommends no prison time
The attorneys for former Spokane police officer Karl F. Thompson say their client should serve no prison time for the death of Otto Zehm.
That recommendation comes after federal prosecutors recently asked U.S. District Court Judge Fred Van Sickle to sentence Thompson to 10 years for using excessive force and lying to investigators.
But defense attorney Carl Oreskovich in court documents called Thompson a man of outstanding character whose convictions are an aberration when compared to a lifetime of earnest dedication to law enforcement.
Van Sickle has scheduled Thompson's sentencing for Nov. 15, more than a year after Thompson was convicted in federal court. Zehm died two days after a 2006 incident in which he was beaten, shocked and hog-tied by police.
