Tenant evicted from home of fatal shooting

Major Crimes investigating fatal shooting in north Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Tenants living at a house that was the scene of a fatal shooting at the end of December have been evicted as part of a Spokane police crackdown on violent crime.

On Dec. 31, Aaron Cummings, 29, was gunned down inside the house, located on North Wall. Witnesses confirmed later that Louis Hanson, 27, asked Cummings if he was the member of a particular gang. When Cummings said he was, police allege that Hanson punched and then shot and killed him.

Hanson was later arrested for Cummings' killing.

With Hanson behind bars police are now trying to solve the root of the violence and they believe solving that problem starts with evicting the residents from the home. Police say the people living at the home were a nuisance and attracted a violent crowd, which is why they were evicted several days ago.

"What happened here is absolutely unacceptable and this will not be tolerated in these neighborhoods," Spokane Police Officer Traci Douglas said.

As part of Chief Frank Straub's new effort to curb crime, Officer Douglas is now in charge of patrolling the neighborhood, and worked with the homeowner to evict the renters from the premises.

"At that time I told her she needed to start packing her stuff and get ready to move because it was coming down and if she was here on the day that county showed up to serve the last paper work, it was a trespass issue at that time and that I was going to take her to jail," Douglas explained.

The renter eventually complied and moved out of the house.

On an unrelated note, in the past several days Douglas has also recovered two stolen cars from the neighborhood.

Louis Hanson, meanwhile, remains in custody and has been charged with first degree murder for Cummings' death. He made his first court appearance Tuesday.
