WE'RE LEARNING NEW INFORMATION TONIGHT ABOUT AN APARTMENT
FIRE THAT KILLED TWO PEOPLE AND SENT A FIREFIGHTER
TO THE HOSPITAL WITH THIRD DEGREE BURNS.
GOOD EVENING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US I'M NADINE
29 YEAR OLD FIREFIGHTER CHARLES MCKENZIE WAS BURNED
IN THE FIRE TRYING TO SAVE THE TWO VICTIMS.
HE'S A NEW RECRUIT AND HAS BEEN WITH THE DEPARTMENT
FOR ABOUT A YEAR.
HE IS NOW RECOVERING AT HARBORVIEW IN SEATTLE.
KXLY 4'S GRACE DITZLER IS LIVE AT THE SCENE AND GRACE,
FIREFIGHTERS SAY A GOOD SAMARITAN IS THE REAL HERO
NADINE, FIREFIGHTERS SAY A PASSER -BY TRIED TO SAVE
THE PEOPLE TRAPPED IN THEIR APARTMENT BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS
ARRIVED ON SCENE.
FIREFIGHTERS SAY THE OUTCOME OF THIS TRAGIC FIRE COULD'VE
BEEN EVEN WORSE.
YESTERDAY, A BUILDING IN LAURA COLE'S APARTMENT COMPLEX,
LOOKED LIKE THIS: VIEWER VIDEO OF FLAMES
i stepped outside and there was just smoke and ash
everywhere it was surreal actually :6W6 22
LAURA EVACUATED WITH HER PUPPY, AND THE FIRE NEVER
GOT TO HER BUILDING.
today i feel grateful and i feel good grateful it
didn't jump buildings :7W7 22
BUT OTHERS WEREN'T SO LUCKY.
TWO PEOPLE DIED, AND 18 UNITS WERE DAMAGED.
A FIREFIGHTER WAS SEVERLY INJURED.
we're very hurt we lost two people in this fire, but
the building was occupied it could have been much
worse :5W8 22
ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF BRIAN SCHAEFFER SAYS THAT'S THANKS
TO A GOOD SAMARITAN, ANTONY JONES, WHO SAW THE FIRE
BEFORE ANYONE CALLED 911.
actually went to the second floor, found that people
were trapped in the apartment, he broke down the door
himself, tried to make the rescue himself, was pushed
back by heat, realized he couldn't make entry into
that apartment unit then went very methotically, to
all these apartments rescued 2 dogs, 2 cats himself
and then alerted everybody to the fire even before
the fire even before the fire was turned into 911,
truly a hero :24W9 24
FIREFIGHTER CHARLES MCKENZIE TRIED TO SAVE THE PEOPLE
INSIDE THE BUILDING, BUT WAS BADLY INJURED BY THE
1000 DEGREE FLAMES.
you see we call the black pattern there a v pattern,
directly below the v pattern, firefighter mckenzie
was on his hands and knees and he was pulling the
victim, so as he wa spulling the victim the fire came
ov erthe top of him :13W10 24
MCKENZIE WAS TAKEN TO HARBORVIEW IN SEATTLE.
FIREFIGHTERS SAY THEY BELIEVE HIS RECOVERY WILL BE
SUCCESSFUL, BUT NOT EASY.
LAURA SAYS SHE'S SO GRATEFUL FOR THE WORK OF ALL THE
CREWS INVOLVED THAT KEPT HER SAFE YESTERDAY.
they risk their lives everyday and it's important
to remember that :4W11 22
FIREFIGHTERS SAY THIS WAS AN ACCIDENTAL FIRE, STARTED
EITHER FROM SMOKING MATERIALS OR AN OVERLOADED POWER
WE ALSO LEARNED TODAY BECAUSE OF THE AGE OF THIS BUILDING,
THERE WERE NO FIRE SPRINKLERS IN THE UNITS.
HOWEVER, WE'RE TOLD EVERYONE IN THE BUILDING IS REQUIRED
TO HAVE FIRE INSURANCE.
THE MEDICAL EXAMINER WILL RELEASE THE NAMES OF THE
VICTIMS WHO PASSED AWAY.
REPORTING IN NORTH SPOKANE GRACE DITZLER KXLY 4 NEWS.
