Seasoned veterans responded to deadly shooting
Three Spokane police officers, all of whom are seasoned veterans of the department, were involved in a South Hill car chase early Tuesday morning that ended with an officer-involved shooting.
The ranking officer at the scene at 9th and Monroe was Sergeant Kevin King. King, a former K-9 officer, used his blue patrol car to pin Jacob Dorfman's Jeep Grand Cherokee against the Ace Hardware building.
Another officer that responded to the scene was K-9 officer Shawn Kendall, who rammed the front of Dorfman's vehicle and stopped his forward progress, preventing his escape.
Kendall teaches defensive tactics at the police department's training center and is currently working the night shift along with his new K-9 partner, a German Shepherd named Talon.
The third officer is Terry Preuninger, who stopped his patrol car outside the passenger side of the Dorfman's vehicle and kept him from getting back on Monroe Street.
Preuninger also teaches at the police training center including classes on rapid responses to "active shooters" and is an expert in patrol procedures.
In fact, Preuninger was leading an in-service training course just last week and Police Chief Frank Straub was one of Preuninger's students. Straub said he was glad to have three different training officers all at the same shooting scene.
Preuninger's wife Lori is a crime scene technician, and was not allowed to collect evidence at the fatal shooting scene because it could represent a conflict of interest since her husband was involved.
On Thursday the Washington State Patrol identified the fourth officer at the scene who shot Dorfman as Adam Valdez, a six-year veteran of the force.
KXLY has learned that when police arrested Dorfman after a January 19 pursuit that started as a shoplifting at the General Store, they found a loaded .38 caliber pistol in his trunk.
The seizure meant that Dorfman, a convicted felon, was able to obtain another handgun between the time he was released from the Spokane County Jail on Feb. 2 the deadly showdown with officers less than three days later.
