Good news as summer comes to an end: Residential burglaries are down by a wide margin.
The Spokane County Sheriff's Office reports that burglaries decreased nearly 8-percent between June and July. Between July 1 and July 13 they dropped 40.6-percent.At the beginning of August burglaries were down 27-percent.
This comes in contrast to the beginning of summer, when burglaries took a sharp spike, with brazen thieves staking out homes in scarcely populated unincorporated Spokane County and Spokane Valley, then making quick work of stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics and jewelry
"It is hugely attributed to citizens taking action, seeing those suspicious vehicles, suspicious people in their neighborhoods, calling us and letting us know about it, rather than just being apprehensive and just thinking 'Well maybe they're just lost, maybe they're just here seeing someone else' so they took the initiative," Chamberlin said.
Not only are they catching thieves but victims are getting their stolen items back too. If you've been the victim of a burglary go to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office Facebook page where they have posted images and a list of recovered items.
