Police: Walgreens clerk punches armed robber
A man trying to steal from a Spokane Walgreens was confronted by a clerk who, when threatened by the suspect, punched him in the face.
Just before 1 a.m. Friday, a man, identified as Richard Edmonds, 25, walked into the Walgreen's at Division Street and Empire Avenue. The clerk saw Edmonds allegedly steal several items, including a black stocking cap with tassels, and walk out the front door.
When the woman confronted him about the items he pulled out a knife and threatened her with it, said Spokane police.
In an effort to defend herself, the woman punched the robber in the face, knocking him to the ground, causing him to drop his knife. Police said the clerk took Edmonds' knife and he took off running from Walgreens.
Spokane police responded and set up a perimeter around the store. An officer was driving to the scene when he spotted a man walking down the 200 block of East Glass. He was wearing a black stocking cap with tassels.
The officer detained the man, brought him to the Walgreens and the clerk identified him as the robber whom she punched.
Edmonds was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery and was booked into the Spokane County Jail.
This is the second time this week an employee fought back when faced with an armed robber.
Spokane police said they recommend that citizens do not confront people who are armed.
