Need to get rid of that traffic ticket? Head to traffic school
The Spokane Police Department has started a traffic class that will make it easier for you to have a clean driving record if you ever wind up getting a ticket.
The Safe Traffic Operation Program -- or STOP -- is offering a class that will keep that citation from being reported to your insurance company.
While it's true you can use the school to keep down your insurance rates or have a clean driving record so you can drive the company car, these classes are really about preventing injuries and saving lives.
"Well I like the fact that it's not going to go on your driving record," Spokane Police Officer Nate Spiering said. "It's not going to be used against you as far as insurance goes because they'll never know about it if you complete our driver's education course."
The eight-hour course, which includes videos and Powerpoint presentations, goes well beyond the standard stop and go lessons you remember from driver's education. It's a refresher course on keeping your passengers safe and you out of court.
"What to be on the lookout for so you don't creamed going down to the cougar game. Not just creamed but also civilly liable down the road for a mistake that you made that ends up being a violation of the rules of the road that is maybe obscure that you don't know about it," Spiering explained.
For example, a little known law requires you to stop at crosswalks when other vehicles have stopped even when you don't see a pedestrian.
"There's a car stopped in the middle of the roadway; there's usually a reason for that. The other cars are required to stop also," Spokane Police Officer Chris Lewis said.
The price of attending traffic school is exactly what you would pay for your basic moving violation which is $124. The classes are either on Saturday or on two weeknights, so if you really need that ticket to go away traffic school may be the way to go.
