Mother, daughter battling breast cancer have Christmas wishes come true
For 17 years radio station KZZU has been making Christmas wishes come true. On Tuesday morning, Dave, Ken and Molly surprised a mother and daughter duo, who are both battling breast cancer.
Earlier this year, Erin Hughes was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Her mom, Claire Bistline, who lives in Arizona, moved in to help take care of Erin's two young boys but things took a turn for the worse when Bistline found out she has cancer too.
"It's tough," Hughes said, as tears rolled down her face.
This mother and daughter are both going through chemo at Christmas. To make matters worse, Hughes and her boys also suffer from a rare heart condition.
"Your plans for the next year could be all for not, everything is just kind of a waiting game," she said.
But, for a few minutes on Tuesday morning, they didn't have to think about cancer. All they had to do was unwrap their Christmas presents courtesy of KZZU.
"It's beyond words. I don't even know what to say, I'm so thankful," Hughes said.
The family was nominated by Hughes' friend Kim Leighty.
"It was awesome to see them smile and happy. Our friend Jennifer said this is the first time I have been giddy in months and I thought yeah that's it, this is the first time I have been giddy in months," Leighty said.
While the gifts are great, they hope next year Christmas and cancer won't mix.
