Hatch Chile Peppers roasting at DeLeon's
When summer starts to cool off things start to heat up at DeLeon Foods, a Mexican grocery store in North Spokane, which is the only place in town to get the New Mexico Hatch Chile Pepper.
Hatch Chile Peppers are the Copper River Salmon of peppers, in that they only come to DeLeon's once a year, and people go crazy for them. Just ask Matt Mazur, who lived in New Mexico for 12 years and knows all about the pepper.
"Ugh. They're addictive on some level. They're super delicious, you can put them on almost anything and it makes it taste better," he said.
The store sold 4,000 pounds of the popular pepper last weekend. Roaster Ray Ortega says he has customer come from as far as British Columbia and eastern Montana for them.
The chiles are grown in Hatch, New Mexico, where the soil and climate conditions of that area make it conducive to growing these kinds of chiles.
DeLeon's will be roasting up Hatch Chile Peppers at 102 E. Francis from 11 to 5 p.m. Saturday but you better get there early because lines are expected to be long.
