Council to vote on Straub appointment Monday night
The Spokane City Council is set to vote Monday night on naming Frank Straub the city's director of law enforcement.
Mayor David Condon created the new position of director of law enforcement so that Straub can quickly start leading the department. The job still pays the same as if he was chief of police but will give him no legal authority to enforce state laws or even write speeding tickets.
The city is calling this the "safe route" for now since Straub isn't a commissioned officer in Washington State yet and he can't be a chief unless he's a commissioned officer.
Straub may be allowed to earn his commission online in a nine week course. As soon as he is commissioned he would be sworn in as the new chief.
City council members are expected to confirm Straub's position, saying they are OK with temporarily appointing Straub as director of law enforcement. Straub got the endorsement of the Lieutenant's and Captain's Association to be director of law enforcement on Friday.
