Five people were displaced by a fire that heavily damaged their home Sunday morning. Firefighters and the renter said it was an accident.
The renter, Sarah Lasarte, said she was trying to care for her 7-month-old child, when her 5-year-old took a candy wrapper and ignited it on a candle. He got scared and threw the wrapper on the bed, which then ignited.
The fire started around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at 5815 N Elgin. Lasarte and her husband gathered the kids and left the home immediately. Firefighters arrived on scene and doused the flames, but most of the damage had already been done. The front room and bedroom were badly burned and there's smoke damage to the entire house. Nearby bushes were singed, and the siding of a vacant house to the north was melted.
On Sunday afternoon, Lasarte and her husband were taking what they could salvage to a relatives home. She's just happy they escaped safely with their three kids ages 11, 5 and a 7-month-old.
"My kids are OK, we're safe," Lasarte said.
The fire was unfortunate she said, but no one was hurt.
"We'll look at the road ahead and not look back. That's pretty much all I can do," Lasarte added.
She and her husband also said it's never too early to teach kids about fire safety.
"I thought maybe the wind blew something off of my night stand from the fan onto the flame onto my bed. I didn't know how it started until my son had said what happened."
The family said they have renters insurance and will be staying with relatives until they can find a new home.
