PATEROS, Wash. -

A central Washington wildfire that had forced residents to evacuate from about five homes is no longer an immediate threat to the houses.

Spokesman Dan Garner at the incident management center at Brewster High School says residents returned home.

About 200 firefighters on the scene Thursday, trying to contain the Crane Road Fire that broke out Wednesday and spread overnight to about 8,500 acres -- more than 13 square miles -- near Pateros and Brewster.

The state dispatched about 45 firefighters and a management team from Spokane to help Douglas County firefighters.

The fire is burning grass, brush, scattered timber and some wheat land.
