SPOKANE, Wash. -

SCRAPS is seeking the public's help to identify the suspect who shot a cat in the head and left it in a garbage bag which was found dropped in a dumpster.

On Monday, animal control officers were called to the Viewpoint Villa Apartments in Spokane Valley. A woman there reported hearing a cat screaming from inside a dumpster.

The apartment manager found a cat with a gunshot wound to the head, wrapped in a blanket, which was inside a garbage bag inside the dumpster.

Neighbor Jan Brown quickly ran to help when she heard her neighbor discover the gravely injured cat Monday morning. She said the cat was bloody and wrapped in a bag, then a mattress pad.

Brown tried to give the cat water until SCRAPS arrived and didn't realize what happened to the cat until animal control officers arrived and a bullet fell out of the animal.

"It just makes you wonder what they'd do to a person, you know, if they would do that to an animal. Those types of people, I hope they do catch him. I don't have much hope. It's just very sad," Brown said.

Due to the severity of the injury the cat had to be euthanized.

In addition to the gunshot wound, a necropsy found the cat had sustained traumatic bodily injuries, SCRAPS reported.
